Challenge
To support Governor John Carney's Executive Order #24, which aims to make Delaware a Trauma-Informed State, I was tasked with creating training for Delaware state employees. This training focused on educating employees about trauma and how to incorporate trauma-informed best practices, including trauma-specific language in requests for proposals and service contracts. The training addressed the directives outlined in the Executive Order to develop tools for training state employees on the impact of trauma and to enhance services and interventions for those affected by trauma.

Solution
Given the sensitive nature of the training topic, I recommend approaching it as a video series rather than a traditional text-based format. This format allows us to break the content into manageable segments, enabling learners to take breaks as needed between topics. Presenting the training in video format also permits the use of animation instead of depicting actual people, helping to reduce any potential triggers the training might cause.
The final training series was rolled out to all state employees in 2022 and is now part of the on-boarding process for new employees. It is available as a video series on the state’s Learning Management System (LMS) but has been consolidated into one e-learning course for ease of viewing here.

YOUR MASK FIRST! | Vicarious & Secondary Trauma Toolkit
To assist and support the Delawareans they serve, state employees must first ensure they care for themselves. The YOUR MASK FIRST! | Vicarious & Secondary Trauma Toolkit was developed as a follow up to the Trauma Awareness Series to assist state employees in identifying vicarious and secondary trauma and managing its impact on them and their the workplace. The toolkit provides valuable tools and resources, such as videos, self-care techniques, and reading content to help individuals recognize both forms of trauma.
